So when I was cutting out my sound hole in my spruce top, using my fly cutter, I did it from the inside-out and now I have small chips broken out of the outside edge of the sound hole. Any suggestions as to how to best fill these?

Thanks!

best solution is the missing pieces but that may not be possible

The problem is likly one of three fold. too slow rpm, dull cutter, trying to remove too much material at once

I suppose that these chips are to big to sand out right?

Yes the chips are lost and yes they are to big to sand out.

I now have a dremel with the Stewmac hole cutter attachment.

I was thinking of doing a saw dust & superglue type thing, but wasn't sure if that would look weird under the finish.

Can you bind the sound hole? Would that remove the effected area?

Ever think about trying a larger sound hole? Make it a feature.

I'm with Lance on this one. Clamp to a backer board like a piece of MDF or plywood. Establish a center mark from the existing cutout and use your new dremel attachment to cut a larger diameter soundhole. Then bind it. It will look good too.

I agree Graham, the 3rd guitar I build had very little material between the rosette and the hole and I bound the sound hole, it wasn't that difficult and I think it looks good now.

Try not to look at the sour creame container though, I know it looks bad but the customer realy wanted it. Like they say, the customer is always right. Rod True38754.7129166667

Ok I'll give the binding idea a try. Would I just bend thin strips of wood like the back and side binding?

Yup, that's what mine is, a scrap piece of side binding. Now you may want to thin it of course, so you don't have much sanding to do. And when you go to install the binding, think about the go-bar technic, I tryed to find a picture, I've seen it on the net somewhere, but just use some small strips to push the binding edge to the soundhole.

Looks like a potty.   I thought maybe you were using pee as an accelerator for hide glue and just didn't want to stain your label.

That's one nice looking potty than, flamed maple edged in a thin bwb perfling. I'd sit my ... on there anytime, to bad it's such a small hole.... oh never mind.

I think it most likely serves as a drool cup (necessary while viewing that great rosette!).

Graham,

I think you have the idea, I would bind the sound hole also. In many case CA stains spruce yellow. CA and spruce are a gamble...I would recommend not getting it on your top. There have been successes with it but for hand builders I worry about the failures.
